Replacement Arches Offer Great Opportunity

casting1.jpg casting2.jpg
Prestress Services of Ohio has recently completed production of a series of twenty castings for the new Fifth Street Bridge over the Great Miami River at their Grove City, Ohio facility. This project for the Ohio Department of Transportation is located in Montgomery County near Dayton. Overall, the project consists of five spans with a total of twenty beams. The center beams consist of a series of bulb tee girders with 4'2" wide precast flanges up to 11'0" deep at the ends that were up to 122' long.

To allow Prestress Services to utilize as much of its existing bulb tee equipment as possible, we at Spillman designed and fabricated a pair of arched soffits, two sets of side forms, and four pairs of end blocks. Each of the arched soffits were 60' long x 2'2" wide and had special support provisions so Prestress Services could easily pull the side rails back from the beams.

In a similar project for United Precast of Mount Vernon, Ohio, we manufactured two arched box beam forms for the new Siebenthaler Avenue Bridge that will also span the Stillwater River in Dayton. This project consisted of a two-piece arched box beam form to produce castings 84' 1-3/4" long x 4'6" wide x 5'0" deep. As in the Fifth Street Bridge Project, we manufactured an arched soffit with removable side rails and an intricate adjustable back-forming system supported by a series of channel top ties. The second form is a smaller version of the first, with a total casting length of 39'0". This project also included a series of new end block sections that United Precast will use with their existing bulb tee formwork.

Spillman Company is experienced and capable of producing a wide range of custom steel formwork for the precast and prestressed concrete industry. Weckenmann Expands to Meet Growing Demand

Weckenmann Anlagentechnik GmbH of Dormettingen, Germany has just completed a manufacturing addition of more than 10,000 square feet. Weckenmann will use this new space to increase both their production and assembly area, and to provide for a modernized paint facility. In addition to the new production area, Weckenmann has also invested in a new "state-of-the-art" computer-controlled laser cutting table and a six-axis self-correcting press brake. These two new machine tools will allow Weckenmann to produce parts to tighter tolerances than has previously been possible.

MCPX-NPCA & NCMA Merge Tradeshows

The first MCPX will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah, the exciting home of the 2002 Winter Olympics, on February 21-23, 2003. This show has been created by the merger of MCX, sponsored by the National Precast Concrete Association, and the Masonry Show, sponsored by the National Concrete Masonry Association. MCPX expects to have more than 500 exhibitors occupying more than 100,000 net square feet of exhibit space. The two sponsoring organizations will also be holding their annual conventions in Salt Lake - the National Concrete Masonry Association and the National Precast Concrete Association - and will be joined in Salt Lake by the American Concrete Pipe Association Short Course and the annual meeting of the International Concrete Paving Institute.

Spillman Company is a founding member of the NPCAA and will be exhibiting at MCPX in Booth #1822. We will be joined there by our German partners, Weckenmann and Vollert, who will occupy Booths W2011 and V2013. To get complete information including registration on the NCPX, go to www.mcpx.org.
