BOXES, BOXES, & MORE

box1.jpg box2.jpg
We at Spillman Company continue to regularly produce a wide variety of custom steel "box" forms for our diverse group of customers. Recent projects have included catch basins, utility vaults, and box culverts to meet a wide variety of underground project requirements.

Customers often ask us what is standard with our box forms. Each and every project we do is custom designed to meet the specific plant and casting requirements of the customer. The overwhelming majority of our box forms are manufactured eight-hinge cores. On most of our larger forms, we use a ten-hinge core. All of our collapsing cores have a center turning mechanism that is connected to either a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder. On our larger boxes, we use a double-tee assembly with twin cylinders. Each core is manufactured from ¼" hot rolled steel plate reinforced with structural angles. The core cover plate is 3/8" thick on the smaller forms and ½" thick on the larger ones. In addition to collapsing cores, we also manufacture tapered cores where the casting specifications allow.

The majority of our jackets are manufactured with hinged, spring-assisted sides with clamped corners. Skin thicknesses are normally ¼" thick with angle reinforcing. Increasingly, our customers have been requesting rollaway sides for catch basins and utility vaults. All of our box forms are manufactured on heavy duty structural base frames that include beams, channels, and angles that are designed to support the given loads. On the larger forms, we use a structural tower to support both the tree assembly and the cover plate.

Spillman offers a variety of pallet and header options in its box line. The most popular pallet has ship lap details and can be manufactured as either a fixed or floating pallet. Many customers have adopted the use of a 50/50 ship lap pallet that allows production of both top and bottom castings without the need for a time-consuming flipping of the pallet to convert from top to base castings. Most pallets are fabricated from reinforced ¼" steel plate, but thicker plate and machined details are sometimes used to meet the requirements.

Box culvert forms vary in some degree from the details described above since most box culvert forms aren't produced with a fixed base frame. Our adjustable box culvert form can be manufactured to meet a wide variety of casting requirements including adjustable span, rise, and wall thickness. Most box culvert form sets include an adjustable core with or without hydraulic stripping corners, a set of adjustable or pinwheel jackets, an adjustable pallet and header, and the necessary top ties, bottom ties, and corner clamps to make the needed casting adjustments.

Since many of the catch basins, utility vaults, and box culvert forms have working height requirements that exceed 48" above the floor level, Spillman has developed a series of catwalks and walkways to provide protection for workers who need to be up on the forms for casting and screeding operations. In addition to catwalks and walkways, we manufacture forms with a wide variety of details that include headers, blockouts and knockouts, vibration details, and a whole host of other details.

SCC AND MAGNET SIDE RAILS ARE A PERFECT MATCH

magnet2.jpg
With the increasing use and acceptance of self-consolidating concrete for double tees within the prestressed concrete community, now is a perfect time to review your side rail details and consider the use of either snap-on or button magnet side rails for both untopped and pre-topped double tees. Many of the standard edge details in use today can be cast using standard EZY-STRYP® magnetic side rails distributed in North America by Spillman Company. Each and every standard rail is manufactured in Germany by Weckenmann using spring steel from Sweden for long and successful use.

We are now pleased to also offer our new EZY-STRYP® button magnet built-in to both the 2" and 4" deep rail with a stock length of 10'. Each 2" button magnet rail is equipped with two button magnets and each 4" deep rail has three button magnets.

To determine how you can immediately increase your double tee productivity and to learn more about all of Spillman's EZY-STRYP® magnetic clamping product line, please feel free to contact us at 614/444-2184; toll-free at 800/44FORMS; via fax at 614/444-1231; or via the Internet at http://www.spillmanform.com/.
