THE OLD IS NEW AGAIN - ARCHED STRUCTURES POPULAR FOR BRIDGES AND BUILDINGS

arch1.jpg arch2.jpg
In the last few months, we at Spillman have had the opportunity to produce custom steel formwork for two unique structures, both of which were arched beams. In addition, we have also quoted a number of additional structures that would require similar formwork. It now occurs to us that some of our regular customers may well be looking at similar projects in the near future and we are therefore sharing the details of each of these projects.

The first project was manufactured for Atlantic Pipe Corporation in Puerto Rico and cast in their Juana Diez facility near Ponce. The barrel roof beam was cast on edge and consisted of a three-piece form system with soffit and side rails. Overall, the span of the arch was 46'4" with a rise at the center of 9'3". The castings were 6'6" wide x 2'3½" deep with a rise at the center of 9'3". The castings were used to provide curved roof structures for above ground stations at the Tren Urbano in metropolitan San Juan. Initially, Atlantic Pipe had used the forms to produce segments for two different stations and is seeking future contracts as well.

More recently, we delivered an arched bridge beam form to Ross Prestress for the plant in Bristol, Tennessee for the city of Danville, Virginia. Ross will be using the form to produce more than seventy castings in seven different set-ups that will be as long as seventy-four feet. Each casting will be 6'0" wide x 4'0" deep and includes specially designed back-forming to allow the precast arched beam segments to be post-tensioned in pairs and then used as stay-in-place formwork as part of the overall structure. This project was cast upright and included a bottom surface radius of 80'8", a span of 60'6" for half the arch at the center, and a rise of 5'10½". These "U" shaped sections are each 6'0" wide x 3'6" high with 8" thick legs and slab.

Although each of these projects represents somewhat unusual shapes, they are each clear indications of the diversity of custom formwork that is a regular part of our manufacturing for the precast concrete industry. We at Spillman Company welcome the opportunity of providing for your custom formwork requirements as well and look forward to discussing your requirements in the very near future.

CONCRETE SPACERS ANSWER COMPATIBILITY CONCERNS

spacer.jpg
For many years, Spillman has offered concrete spacers as part of our rebar chair product line. Recently, there has been a significant increase in the demand for concrete spacers because of their strength and compatibility with the surrounding concrete. Spillman is pleased to offer our SPACEMAN series that is designed as a "double cover" spacer for both 1½" and 2" covers. SPACEMAN are packaged 200 per bag and can be used in a variety of heavy-duty cover applications. For additional details on SPACEMAN and all of Spillman's rebar and mesh products, please contact Tom Coniglio at 800/44FORMS or tconiglio@spillmanform.com.

FALL - A GREAT TIME TO REVIEW FORM MAINTENANCE

With cooler fall temperatures and shorter days now upon us, fall is the perfect time to review the condition of your forms and equipment as you complete the current production year and begin to look forward to 2002. For many years, Spillman Company has offered a wide range of form hardware, casting accessories, and chamfer strips to assist our customers in performing routine maintenance. In addition, we also have in stock 3/8" hot rolled steel plates that are 12' wide x 40' long for those customers who have flat slab beds and casting tables and who are considering re-decking their beds in the next few months.

Also, we at Spillman have the equipment and ability to refurbish certain types of forms here in our plant during the late fall and early winter months. Those types of forms that have historically been the most cost effectively rebuilt include collapsing core forms for catch basins, utility vaults, and other similar products. We recently completed a project that consisted of resizing and rebuilding two air traffic control tower modules to allow our customer to reuse an existing pair of forms on a new tower. Please feel free to contact Curt Porr at 800/44FORMS or cporr@spillmanform.com to discuss your requirements.
