BOXES, BOXES, BOXES

Spillman Company annually fabricates dozens of catch basins, utility vaults, and box culverts to meet the diverse requirements of our precast and pipe customers. We are particularly proud of the many different types of box forms that we custom fabricate.

For our catch basin customers, we offer tapered, collapsing, and suspended core type forms. Each of these styles can be matched to one of four different jacket configurations - tapered, hinged, fly-away, or roll-away. Far and away the most common combination incorporates a collapsing eight-hinge core with hydraulic/pneumatic cylinder with hinged, spring-assisted jackets. This style easily accommodates a floating pallet to adjust core depths, a top groove former to manufacture risers, and a wide diversity of blockouts and knockouts. Clients whose product requirements are either fixed or utilize smaller dimensions most often chose a tapered air release core.

The majority of our utility vault customers chose a collapsing core as well. All of our utility vault forms are fabricated with a minimum skin thickness of ¼" HR steel plate with core cover plates of either 3/8" or 1/2". Our hinges are fabricated from structural steel tubing and a brass hex pin that is non-corrosive. Recent utility vault form projects have included a diverse variety of accessories that included knockouts, blockouts, sumps, access openings, pulling iron details, insert and grounding holes, and vibration packages.

Even though there have been standard specifications from ASTM for box culverts for thirty years, we at Spillman Company continue to fabricate a growing collection of box culvert forms. A recent project illustrates well the evolution of this product line. This form order is designed to produce an adjustable "MEGA-BOX" with spans from 14' to 24' in 2' increments and rises from 4' to 8' in 1' increments. We utilized our machined boss alignment system to insure that changes could be made quickly and efficiently over the full range of product sizes.

EZY-STRYP® MAGNETS SIMPLIFY SET-UP & STRIPPING

EZY-STRYP® magnetic clamping devices have been in use by Spillman Company customers for more than four years. These durable high-strength devices are being used daily to efficiently and economically fasten side rails for a wide variety of flat casting requirements.

A producer of three-sided boxes with multiple casting locations utilizes the standard bar magnet #1725-10 with the transversable magnet adapter #1725-75TMA to produce headwalls and wing walls from 6" through 12" thick. This particular Spillman customer likes the flexibility that is built into the EZY-STRYP® magnetic clamping system that allows for quick set-ups and stripping and allows for a wide variety of product details and casting thicknesses.

A number of Spillman customers who are precasters of utility buildings are using the EZY-STRYP® magnetic clamping system with the standard bar magnet #1725-10 and the EZY-STRYP® shutter rail system in thicknesses from 3" through 8". These producers of castings for the utility and communications industry have found that the 10' shutter rails can be used in a variety of combinations or can be easily sawed to the required casting dimensions. These producers report significantly improved productivity with reduced forming, stripping, and set-up costs.

One of the most used elements of the EZY-STRYP® magnetic clamping system is the low profile bar magnet #1725-10-2 or the standard bar magnet #1725-10 with either 2" or 4" thick shutter rails for double tee production. Prestressers are using the EZY-STRYP® shutter rail system on new beds with flat decks or with existing beds to produce castings which are narrow. Both shutter rails are available in 10' lengths. The 2" deep rail that is actually 1-7/8" deep requires a bar magnet every 10' while the 4" deep rail requires a bar magnet every 5'.
